Madalitso Chimpeni

Madalitso Chimpeni is an innovator, entrepreneur and sustainable energy enthusiast with four years’ experience working in the sustainable energy sector. He has a BSc in Biotechnology and a certificate in Development Entrepreneurship with focus in Off-energy. In the past four years he has worked with different organizations in promoting briquettes, biogas, ethanol gel and clean cook stoves for clean cooking.

In 2020, he collaborated with experts from the University of Surrey and Portsmouth to design a project that centered on production and distribution of BIOCNG (purified biogas) at a commercial scale. He also worked with a local CBO in Mwanza district to introduce briquette production as an alternative to charcoal for cooking in households. It is recent that he developed the Helix Wind Turbine, a novel technology for generating electricity in rural area. With the innovation he won the Malawi Innovators Design Competition (MIDC) and the CIMPAD Youth entrepreneurship and Innovation Award. He intends to pilot the technology at Tsenga primary School in Mwanza district, Malawi by installing a 2KW Helix wind turbine at the school. The pilot will enable Madalitso to determine the socio-economic impacts of the turbine, its technical feasibility and ability to scale.
